Mea Culpa!

by Alison

My teeth feel so good! Nicole very kindly cleaned my teeth this morning and they feel glorious, and they look so nice. I am luxuriating in the feel of super clean, super shiny teeth. BUT, and yeah that’s a big but, she found some decay! We have been experiencing a veritable epidemic of decay in young people lately, but I am no spring chick. Also Dr. Urban recently had decay and Beth did too! All three of us! We are all well over 40.

Lucky for me we caught this decay when it is still super small and way before it hurt. So I will be just fine with a very small filling. But what the heck is going on? Why are we seeing so much decay? Without a controlled study we are left to speculate, but here is our educated and experienced guess.

1. Sports drinks are everywhere – They seem healthy, but they are full of sugar and decay teeth.
2. Soda drinking, and yes diet sodas decay teeth, is out of control.
3. Lack of good oral hygiene.
4. Lack of fluoride in diet and toothpaste.
5. Kissing someone who does not have good oral hygiene.
6. Eating a lot of carbs, as carbs feed bacteria much like sugar does.

I do not do any of the first 5 things listed, but I do #6. And a patient sent me an article the other day that said that the fruit and vegetables nowadays are less nutritious than they were years ago. The article blamed higher CO2 in the atmosphere, but growers are also looking to grow pretty crops and faster growing crops not more nutritious ones.

I do eat more carbs than anything, and now I am wondering about the fruit and veg I eat. Are they less nutritious? Is it something else? I don’t know. But I do know that getting my cleaning and check up at the right time, and getting my filling done ASAP will keep my teeth and gums healthy for a lifetime.
