Smile! Do you like what you see? Here's a simple checklist to see how your dental health stacks up:

    • Are your teeth as white as they can be?
    • Are your gums red, swollen, receding, or bleeding?
    • Are your teeth crowded, overlapping, or crooked?
    • Do you have any unwanted spaces between your teeth?
    • Are your teeth too large or too small?
    • What would you change about your smile?
Do you have chronic bad breath?
Try brushing your teeth two minutes in the morning and two minutes before bedtime, clean in between your teeth at least once daily with floss or a specially designed tooth pick such as a "Rotapoint".  Brush your tongue thoroughly  to cleanse it of bacterial growth.

Don't have time to brush after lunch?
Eat an apple and rinse your mouth with water.

Do you get headaches, especially in the morning?
Do they get worse when you are under a lot of stress?

You could be clenching and grinding your teeth while asleep. There are different therapies that can free you from this pain. The first step is to contact your dentist.

HELPFUL HINT: Massage your jaw joint while in a hot shower.

Do you eat sticky foods (like raisins) and drink lots of fruit juice?
Although this sounds like a healthy snack, it may mean more cavities. Raisins are high in sugar, and when they get stuck in your teeth, there is a much higher incidence of cavity formation. Fruit juice is also very high in sugar and constant consumption can be a problem. Don't be afraid to enjoy these foods and drinks; just enjoy them in moderation.

Seek dental care immediately if you have:
Pain, non-healing sores, white/red growths in your mouth, loose teeth, painful clicking in your jaw, frequent headaches (especially in the morning), bleeding gums, or if you haven't been to the dentist in more than six months.

What is the best kind of toothbrush to use?
A soft brush with the ADA seal on the back of the package.

How often should I get a new toothbrush?
Every 2-3 months.  This is an inexpensive way to maintain oral health..

What is the best way to brush my teeth?
Small circular motions around all surfaces of the teeth. You should hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gumline. You should brush for a minimum of two full minutes. Brushing too hard or too often can cause gum problems.

    How important is flossing?
Flossing is an integral part of good oral hygiene. Bacterial colonies flousish between your teeth, and the toothbrush can't remove it. Over time, this can lead to cavities and bad breath. Improper flossing techniques can cause damage to your gums. Consult your dentist about good flossing habits.  Devices such as a Rotapoint pick or a Proxabrush may be more effective for you.  ASK YOUR DENTIST!  Flossing is sometimes NOT the ideal way to clean in between your teeth.
